A five-day thematic workshop on “Sustainability in Electoral Administration: Adequate Resourcing for Credible Elections,” was held in Maputo, Mozambique, from 4th to 8th March 2013.
This joint initiative of the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) brought together representatives of Electoral Management Bodies from over 45 countries, electoral practitioners, international electoral experts and representatives of international organisations active in the field of electoral assistance, mainly UNDP and EU.
The workshop discussed issues of main concern for electoral administrators such as: What are the different options and models that promote and ensure sustainability in electoral administration?
What is the role of the National Electoral Commissions in ensuring credible, transparent and independent elections?
What is the impact of political parties and other key electoral stakeholders on civic education, electoral process monitoring and election and election observation?
How does the financing of electoral campaigns affect the decision-making process and the democratic governance in general?
The workshop was officially opened by the Mozambican Minister of State Administration, Ms. Carmelita Namashulua and President of the Electoral Commission of Mozambique, Dr. João Leopoldo da Costa.
Keynotes were also delivered by the EU Ambassador to Mozambique, Mr. Paul Malin, as well as by Ms. Geraldine J Fraser-Moleketi, Practice Director of the Democratic Governance Group UNDP/BDP, and by the UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Mozambique, Ms. Jennifer Topping.
